Spots is missing

and I feel responsible. I haven't posted in awhile because, of Spots missing. Last Sunday, I took Spots up to a place by Hatcher's Pass. Took some snacks and my camera to get some great photos. About 20 minutes after leaving the truck we went into the woods to find a place by a big creek to just hang out. 5 minutes in we were charged by a black bear, I unleashed Spots and he went into action as that is what he was bred to do. I ran back to the truck and got my 12 gauge shotgun and went back. There was no sign of the bear or Spots. I called for him constantly but, no reply. I spent about 3 hours looking for him and nothing. I called 4 friends and we have been going back to look for him every day except, for today. I think I am afraid of what I might find. I keep telling myself, he is still chasing the bear but, I think I know the outcome. I decided to wait a couple of days and go back this weekend and I may spend a couple of days camping in case he got lost and he comes back.

Right now, I am an emotional wreck and blame only me. I have an appt. with my Mental Health specialist on Monday. Please put Spots in your prayers. What I do know is, Spots is a HERO and saved my life. I hope you all understand my feelings right now. Thank you, John

Hey John
So Sorry to hear about Spot. Are there any homes in that vicinity? Perhaps he got adopted by someone in that area..

John, try not to feel badly about your decision. I was forced to put down a German Shepherd of mine 9 years ago in AK (Buck, most faithful companion I ever had ) that was dangerous and it definitely was a difficult thing that live with still to this day. As an avid outdoorsman and current Police K9 handler in Texas, I can honestly say that you did the right thing and I would have done the exact same things you did, except I would have been armed from the get go. Regardless, dogs have been a huge part of our lives since the beginning of time and were and are in most cases a self defense line of defense. Spots protected you and we don’t know what happened. He may come back and get picked up by a passing stranger, who knows.... FYI, Been following over 10 years since our time on the AK outdoor forum, just have much to comment on but love your reads.Stay strong brother.

Hi John, sorry to read about the Spots situation, try not to beat yourself up about it if you can. I've read some tips in the past for finding lost dogs like bringing some of your worn clothing with your scent on it into the woods and leaving them there. If the dog finds them, it may stay in that spot. I'm sure by now you've been doing your own research on dog finding methods. Truly hope it works out for you. Take care, M.

Since we saw you the other day, have you found him? There is a possibility he will go home. I keep hoping that he will eventually show up at your cabin. Funny how dogs can find their way back. Just a quick story about that monster cat we were telling you about... He tore up one of the screens in the back of my truck and I went to the spring to get water, he hopped out of the truck at the spring and being new to the area and not being in the outdoors hardly at all due to his problems, I was concerned for his safety. Two days after he hopped out of the truck, on one of the rainiest nights ever he showed up to the tent my son and I were camping in while building the cabin. Don't give up hope...Hatchers Pass is a lot farther away from your place and if he took off up into the mountains, much farther than the spring was to my place out there.
