This was the temperature Sunday morning about 7:30 am. I decided to go for a ride anyway. I made me a good breakfast first. It's still dark this time of day so, breakfast is by oil lamp.
About 11:30 am, I left to ride up to Willow Creek, one of my favorite places to go. This is what it looked like when I left.

This is a cabin across the creek, no road to it.
How is it accessed, you ask? By handrail, this is how they cross and bring their supplies across.
Pretty neat, eh?
On the way back, I stopped at a parking area where people park their vehicles and off load their snowmachines to hit the trails.
Even when you drive way out on dirt roads and hardly see anyone, it's hard to get away from modernization.
It was still early so, I decided to take a ride to Deshka Landing in Willow. This is a place where people go to launch their snowmachines in the Winter and boats in the Summer. Here is where it all happens. People also use it as a staging area for supplies they are taking out to their remote cabins. You pay by the day or by the season.

On the way back to the cabin, I stopped at Kashwitna Lake to photograph Denali.
By the time I got back, It was still pretty cold so, this called for something to take the chill off. This is a good soup.
Macaroni
I sauteed 1/2 lb. ground breakfast sausage, 2 handfuls of sliced mushrooms, 2 cups chopped onions, 2 cups chopped sweet peppers, parsley, couple cloves minced garlic, salt and pepper to taste. Add all these ingredients and 28 oz. of canned diced tomatoes to the macaroni and the water used to cook the macaroni, stir and enjoy.
Well, that pretty much how my Sunday went. Even as cold as it was, it was good to get out and enjoy myself. take care.

What a great day out, a person has to do that now and then. I loved your pics of the country side. I loved that cabin and how you access it. That is pretty neat! It has been cold here too at -13C but not as cold as you, so I shouldn't complain..lol. That soup sure looks good! What a great way to warm up on a chilly day next to the fire with that great looking soup. I could eat soup all winter. Thanks for sharing your day!

John.....I SO enjoyed this post! The pictures with the long range views are my favorite. It is also nice to see you in some of the pictures (for a little perspective). I never thought about the cell/antenna towers being in Alaska but alas, you have shown us that they are there! Not too far from where I live is a cell tower that was designed to look like a real tree.....but the thing is that the tree that the tower is supposed to look like is not natural to our state and therefore the tower/tree sticks out like a sore thumb....rather comical actually. Even the birds avoid it. We are set for a major snow storm this weekend with a lot of high winds and coastal flooding. Just serves to remind us once again, that Mother Nature is in charge! Even though it was cold, yes, it was still a good day to get away. The temps. seem to be going up a bit so, it may call for another day ride this weekend. The cabin is pretty cool. Handrails are used quite a bit in Alaska. I'm with you, I enjoy good hot soup.

I have never been to Deshka landing. One of these days. LOL You must have a lot of snow out there to take the machine out. We have dirt still everywhere here. Like the pictures. How is the ice out there for ice fishing? I dont think we have even had a real freeze for any length of time here this winter so far. Looks like your winter is much better ...

We have tons of snow and the ice is good out here. Today is the first day with temp. at 20 degrees. Got more snow coming in the next 3 days.
We may have to figure a way out there to try out the machine...just need to motivate the boy. Hahaha.

I also loved the photos! it truly is so interesting to go along for a bit of adventure with you, John. the world is suddenly white here, too, but certainly not as much as you have. we had very cold temps for a few days that meant indoors only for me! I love winter when it is a balmy 30. haha! the soup looked delicious. nothing warms the soul like soup. :) be safe on future outings! Debi

Hi Debbi, thanks. 30 degrees is nice here but, it makes it kinda dangerous going out on the lakes and rivers. I like to travel 20 degrees or lower. You're right about the soup.
We are also having a bit of a cold spell here, but at about -10F, I can handle it. As long as the sun is shining, I can pretend it's warmer. We've been pretty lucky here in the interior with the few and far between -20F days. I'm not complaining, but it makes me wonder what our summer will be like. I like a moderate summer - not a 80F summer. Of course, there are still many weeks left in winter. We could end up with a March like the one we had back in 2008 I think... we saw -40F for several weeks and everyone's septic tank froze up because there wasn't much snow to insulate the ground. That was terrible!

Hi Susan, so nice to hear from you again. You guys do get the sub zero temps. up North. Fairbanks is the true Alaska community. Every now and then, I think about moving farther North. My area is getting overrun. Frozen septic tanks can be a problem as well as water pipes. Last Summer, we saw 90 degree weather, way to hot. Take care

Hiya John looks like the chef is cooking again,soup looks good.Weather here has been crazy ,went from wearing shorts at Christmas to cold weather in January it's mid 30's day and 18 to 27 at night.We just missed a snow storm this weekend, happy it moved on out we just got a dusting. Hey Mary, it is a cool cabin. The person has a gold claim on the creek and uses it from time, mostly Spring, Summer and Fall. Sometimes in Winter. Winter he can walk on the ice.
Send some snow! This perpetual tepid is killing me! Grass growing under the snow machine. Still, spectacular dawns over Roadhouse and low fuel bills are a consolation. Had a "massive" 3 hour power outage, first in a couple of years. Nondalton is getting way too suburban. Carol is well and Paul and Susan plan to pull out and go to America in a month or so. Permanently. They have their place up for sale. I finally took a development lot above the Church and we are working to drain and fill it. Bringing in a trailer next spring as a starter. John.....Just checking on you (hope you don't mind!). Where I live we got some serious snow (considering that we rarely get enough to play in) and it made me think of your beautiful world that you experience each winter. With this storm came MAJOR beach erosion but the waves were absolutely gorgeous! It seems that when we have big weather approaching, the animals go into a feeding frenzy so it became my job to keep the feeders all full (which I did)....then it was fun to do some cooking while the storm laid down the white stuff all day. Nothing like a big bowl of hot soup while watching the snow. Hope you are well and enjoying the beauty that surrounds you.
