Supplies, where and how

I have been asked on numerous occasions, how and where do I get my food and supplies. I decided it would be a good subject matter for a post.
Without going into depth because, I like to keep personals matters my own, growing up, we lived off the land as much as possible. As I grew older, I have tried to keep that part of life alive. I have lived a back to basic lifestyle as much as possible. Up until I bought this town property, most of my foods were either grown, hunted, fished or gathered. For obvious reasons, many things needed to be purchased, flour, salt, pepper, coffee, tea and so on.
For many of the things that I purchased, I would call someone in the office of a local Air Taxi service that serviced my area to shop for me and then bring out to me. It wasn't cheap but, was less expensive than me paying a round trip ticket, transportation to the stores and of course my time, which is very valuable to me.
If there was something I needed furniture wise or otherwise, I would build out of natural material or whatever was available. Many of the things I have talked about, were before digital cameras came about and had no idea that I would Blog about myself and my life. So, you will just have to use your imagination.
Since I bought my town cabin, I have pretty much lived like a Concrete Alaskan, which will change next Spring. I'm not trying to say anything bad about people who live on the road system, it's just not me. My town cabin is about 40 miles from Wasilla but, I prefer to travel 15 miles to a smaller grocery store to shop. More expensive but, easier.
Something else but, a different subject. Last night, I was sitting around and kinda got bored so, I decided to watch a movie, a Christmas movie with Dolly Parton, I forgot the name of the movie {old age, I guess},LOL. As I watched it, my mind got to wondering about this coming Christmas and I started looking around the cabin and seeing how I will display ornaments and decorations and the tree then, I started planning for my remote cabin as well. It really made me feel good and no matter what, winter is my most favorite time of the year as is Thanksgiving and Christmas and I can't wait. Hopefully this year, I will have someone special to spend it with. So, I hope I have answered some of the questions and gave you some more insight about me. As time goes on, I will make more posts such as this one.

As I was cooking dinner tonight I realized most everything I made came from our farm.. except for some staples. Duck noodle soup with homemade noodles, bread rolls fried summer squash and onions. Noodles and rolls made from fresh ground flour. I get organic wheat from a local farmer. Anyway, just surprised me...

I just noticed your comment about your friend from New Mexico. Dah. Is he living around the Capitan area or in the Albuquerque area? Was the picture taken in NM or elsewhere? I use to go the watch them dance back when I lived in NM. I love the Apache dancing. Of course I also love the native drums up here too.

Love your post today. LOL You can still do a lot to provide for yourself from hunting, trapping, fishing, and foraging.

Very interesting, John! Isn't it great how resourceful some people can be? I'm wondering if the Christmas movie you are talking about is called "Smokey Mountain Christmas"? I love this movie and I love Dolly Parton even though I don't think she is that great of an actress. I think it's mostly because it's a mountain story, which I am always drawn to. The other day I was looking at someone's property in Cooper's Landing on the Kenai and it was absolutely heavenly and my first thought was about how it would look with snow all around and the trumpeter swans on the river and I suddenly got a hankering for the holiday season. But I sure am enjoying this Alaska summer, too!

Great post John, thanks for doing it. I'm always interested in the day to day details that so many leave out. They probably think it's too mundane to write about but not to me.

I learned something I would have never thought about. They actually do this as a service at that Air Taxi? Wow, that's service. Is that done at other places as well? Man, you're right, that's would save some serious money that one could use on shopping!

Hi off grid mama, nice to hear from you. Now that sounds like a good meal. It is so nice when you can benefit from things you make or grow.

Hi Wash, I believe it is somewhere around Albuquerque, can't be sure. The picture was taken in the village I lived close to out by Lake Clark.

Hi Penny, you guessed it, "Smokey Mountain Christmas", I remembered it after I left. I thought it was a nice movie. I have always liked the Cooper Landing area but, it has become to busy for me.

Hi R, not sure about other services shopping for someone but, it never hurts to ask. There are some private shopping services around but, I have never used them. I believe Denaina Air out of Merril Field provides this service also.

Hi grammie, you know, I actually got ice cream flown in. They keep it frozen and then put it in coolers and it stays pretty solid. I like my ice cream also.
