A new year is near

I would like to welcome Paul, Billy Jack and Akhomesteader. It is the day after Christmas and it is a nice day. I went out this morning and got water from my waterhole, split some wood and then for awhile I sat on the roof of my cabin and scanned the mountains behind me. Didn't see anything moving. But, it was very peaceful. I realized just how much I don't miss civilization. It is so quiet, you could hear a dog off in the long distance barking.

A nice productive day

I woke up this morning about 8:30 a.m.to -10. The day was clear and cold. I sat looking out the window drinking hot coffee and then made a good breakfast. Eggs, sausage and homefries. About 10:30 a.m. I got dressed and went out walking the land to look for a Christmas tree. I found one that has been the nicest yet. Took me about 15 min. to drag it back. I shook the snow off brought it inside to dry and then went out and hauled wood and split it. The wood split real easy. After stacking it, I came inside and set the tree up and decorated it. When you are alone, this makes the day much more enjoyable. I got the tree decorated and set up the train I bought off of Ebay. Almost felt like a kid again. It's a shame friends don't come to visit. Hey, that's life. Anyway, I woke up about 4:15 a.m. to do my chore and what greeted me when I looked out the window? A meteor shower and it displayed for an hour and a half. I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer and went back to sleep. Tomorrow is laundry day, haul water and bake bread and cookies.

"Christmas"

Christmas is forever, not for just one day,
for loving, sharing, giving, are not to put away
like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf.
The good you do for others is good you do yourself...
~Norman Wesley Brooks, "Let Every Day Be Christmas," 1976

BRRRRRRR! It's cold out

"WOW", the days and nights have been really cold. The nights and early mornings have been -12 to -25. The days have been sunny though. Today I deided to make homemade Chicken Noodle Vegetable Soup and Homemade Italian Bread. MMMMmmmmm! It sure is good. You just can't beat the smell and taste of homemade bread.

What if

WHAT IF?
Friends tell you their secrets
Friends are meant to share
Friends are meant to cheer you up,
What happens when they’re not there?

Is it hard when you don’t have
Someone to lean upon?
When you need a friend to care,
but they, your friends, have gone?

What if you were split
Up from your best friend?
Do you think you’d care
If your friendship ends?

Would you slowly drift apart,
Go in separate ways?
Or would you both grow closer
Grow closer day by day?

What if your friends started
Saying things behind your back?
Would you stand and face them,
Or would your courage lack?

Perhaps it would be safer
To let your friendships mend,
Push these thoughts behind you,
And make the questions end.

A FRIEND

"In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends."
- Martin Luther King Jr.

Winter Wonderland

This morning I woke up to fresh new snow on the ground. The cabin has the smell of Cinnamon Hazelnut coffee freshly brewing and eggs, sausage and homefries cooking on the stove. As the morning got lighter fresh snow is still falling. It looks so nice out there. There are so many people out there who don't appreciate this special feeling. I think I will go out and take a walk through the woods and then come back and make some homemade bread. I will bake one loaf and save another to bake in the morning for breakfast.

First sign of a real winter

Today 12/3/2010 we finally got a real winter day. Last night the wind was howling all night. When the sun came up this morning, the cabin out front was completely white and I couldn't see out the windows. When I went outside there were snowdrifts above my knees. I was as "GIDDY" as a child waking up Christmas morning. Even though it was blowing big time, I bundled up and just sat on the porch. It's just some kind of crazy feeling I get. Anyway it has warmed up to 28 degrees.

"HAPPY THANKSGIVING"

T’was the night of Thanksgiving,
But I just couldn’t sleep.
I tried counting backwards,
I tried counting sheep.
The leftovers beckoned,
The dark meat and white.
But I fought the temptation,
With all of my might.
Tossing and turning,
with anticipation.
The thought of a snack
became infatuation.
So I raced to the kitchen,
Flung open the door,
And gazed at the fridge,
Full of goodies galore.
I gobbled up turkey,
And buttered potatoes,
Pickles and carrots,
Beans and tomatoes.
I felt myself swelling,
So plump and so round.
‘til all of a sudden,
I rose off the ground.
I crashed through the ceiling,
Floating into the sky,
With a mouthful of pudding,
And a handful of pie.
But I managed to yell
As I soared past the trees
Happy eating to all,
Pass the cranberries, please!!
May your stuffing be tasty
May your turkey be plump.
May your potatoes and gravy
Have nary a lump.
May your yams be delicious,
May your pies take the prize
And May your Thanksgiving dinner
Stay off of your thighs!

Just a thought

It's a Friday night about 10p.m. and as I look out the window of my cabin, there is a fog hovering above the frozen lake and the moon is very bright. The stars are starting to show their presence and the quietness is very soothing. Many times people ask how I can stand being alone out here in this wilderness setting and I answer, "How can I not?" I am free from the pollution of noise, lights, crime, and rudeness.

Welcome to my world

Welcome to my world. I decided to start this so, I can let family, friends and new friends see how I live my life in Alaska and to see some of it's beauty. You will then know why I live here. So, hop on and have fun.
